The shipyard "Jachtbouw Noord Nederland" had experience with the building of steel multi-bended-frame. Johan Elsenga , head design
of "Jachtbouw Noord Nederland" made the drawings of the Tielsa,
taking into account the input of Dirk Nauta. One of the first problems to solve
was the thickness of the steel. When the weight was taken into account it should
be 5mm max. But this should not be strong enough. To meet these requirements
Corten-steel was chosen, which is stronger and more stable, but more difficult
to process. One extra advantage of Corten-steel is the resistance against rust.
It forms a tiny layer of rust and then stops due to the 10% copper which had been added.. It acts about the same as aluminium.
